When thinking, talking and writing about style I find myself so often referring to attitude. A way of wearing something with a feeling – attitude, confidence, nonchalance, being fierce, sexy, bold. I really do think that what sets apart two women in the exact same ensemble is the way in which they wear it in terms of their personal attitude. Its so hard to put in to words – in fact – the French who many say do this attitude so well – also say it so well…
…It is that je ne sais quoi.
And the Parisian who has this je ne sais quoi in abundance, and who personally I hold in such high style regards is Caroline de Maigret. Like Emmanuelle Alt she does that ‘I don’t care but I do care’ thing so well. No make-up, messy hair, thrown together clothes, lots of layers… and then the magic je ne sais quoi.
For me trying to recreate this is where it is so easy to go wrong, you need to not try… just be. Choose clothes you find beautiful and wear them because they are beautiful. Not because you want them to make you beautiful. You’re already beautiful, and knowing that is essential in achieving the je ne sais quoi.
Caroline has been quoted as saying ‘Maybe you take us (Parisiennes) as example because we gave up on the idea of looking. Maybe that’s what’s cool, not running after something that doesn’t exist. There is no Prince Charming. Not how life is, and it’s much more fun once you give up all those demands’.
So in my usual round-up of inspiration here are some of my favourite pictures of the beautiful Caroline de Maigret. Now go flash some je ne sais quoi of your own!
Thanks for reading and I’d love to know your take on that…je ne sais quoi
Over the knee boots have been huge for the past few years and they’re not going anywhere for AW15. Leg lengthening and frankly quite warming… they are the perfect boot for Winter. Rule of thumb… the shorter the skirt, the longer the boot. Thigh high boots are super sexy and this season Stuart Weitzman, Isabel Marant and Gucci are all leading the way. On the highstreet head to highstreet hero Zara for near identical takes on the catwalk pieces, then Aldo, Dune and Kurt Geiger are fantastic for elegant looking designs without the hefty price tag.
The most important thing to wear yours with this season – confidence!
Style wise, select heels or flat versions, I keep my heels for the evenings and flats for every day run arounds… then wearing over jeans is a subtle way to edge into the trend, or with tights and a pair of shorts for the tomboy looks and a big loose jumper dress for that cosy but sexy look. For the brave, bare legs and a short skirt looks fantastic paired with a baggy top, a loose t-shirt or heavy knit. Here’s my pick of the best boot inspo….

Date night – something I cringe at hearing but oh so important for my husband and I. We have always cherished date night, even before having a child, it’s an event in the week/month… year even, that provides the perfect excuse to dress up and make an effort! We actually try to do it once a month, we like it to ship our baby away for the night so we can enjoy a lazy morning too. Helps with the hangover!
I have a penchant for small lacy pieces of underwear and in the spirit of oversharing I wanted to let you know my top picks for underwear shopping and give you some racy inspo… these beauties are also perfect to be spotted peeping out from a casual t-shirt or unbuttoned shirt. All of the below can be bought right now at Free People and For Love and Lemons, find the links at the bottom…
Happy shopping and enjoy those date nights!
I don’t quite want to admit that Summer is nearly over as I am a through and through Summer girl at heart, I just love being able to run out the house in slides, a pair of shorts and a t-shirt and not have to worry about layering up. But… I have already started working on my AW15 wardrobe, including two beautiful Bella Freud jumpers, several Zara buys, and some very special boots by Chloe.
AW15 is looking like another season of relaxed boho and rock chick classics, my favourite combination! So in a bid to cheer myself up, and you I hope, I have compiled my Autumn inspiration here… making me seriously excited to hit the highstreet again, in fact I have tomorrow pencilled in for some shopping time!
Any AW15 high-street tips let me know!!! Thanks guys…
Emmanuelle Alt, editor-in-chief of French Vogue and my style crush for at least six years.
Because she nails that effortless chic rock n roll Parisian style. She has an I don’t care attitude towards her dressing (when obviously she does care – very much) but she wears next to no make-up, her hair is hassle free, she sticks to a uniform dress code and she looks so good… to women and men.
Knowing what you like and what looks good on your body is the key to nonchalant dressing, not going with every trend the highstreet adopts from the seasons catwalks and creating a wardrobe of key pieces you can call on year on year. If you love something, find it really beautiful, then you know come the following Winter/Summer you will want to wear it again. It’s not a trend its beautiful. And if it makes you feel beautiful chances are you look beautiful in it as really it all boils down to self confidence and that is something Emmanuelle Alt has in bucket loads!!!
As Summer is getting ready to say farewell (trying to ignore the cold) I am taking style inspiration from this amazing woman in planning my AW15 wardrobe. Here are some of my favourite looks….
Any tips from your style icons? Love to hear whose style you admire so I can style stalk them too!
