I used to detest gold, back at school, instead I covered myself in silver… every birthday or Christmas I’d be requesting yet another ‘return to Tiffany’ piece and I’d wear them with such pride. Then something switched… I’ve no idea why or when but now I will only ever wear gold (apart from my wedding rings which are platinum to match my husbands). And I love my gold jewellery so much choosing which pieces to wear in the morning is always such a pleasure. And I try to take one item off before I leave the bedroom – taking the advice of Lady Chanel.
My solid gold pieces never come off, a small ring on the wedding finger of my right hand – this was my mothers original engagement ring which after it broke and she had it replaced, she kept, and then on my thirtieth birthday she had it melted down and made into a ring for me. It never leaves my hand, and the sentimental value is priceless.
My Vivienne necklace rarely comes off, as does the spinning ‘Good Luck’ I always wear, both solid gold rather than plated so I can wear in the shower without worrying. I bought the spinning luck charm after a particularly bad day.. I’d stumbled into Peter Jones on Sloane Square and was admiring their vintage section when it practically begged me to buy it. It was meant to be anyway and after that the day got a lot better – I was even offered a job. All of the John Lewis stores have these little vintage sections, and they often keep more trays under the desks so always ask to see more if you’re keen to find your own little trinket.
For a while I had a gold anklet I never took off, apart from every time I broke it and then would have to wait for the replacement to arrive. Needless to say this got pretty pricey so I sacked that off and now opt for an occasional anklet when I am wearing the right outfit or in the Summer months. Although I still think the little glimmer of gold on an ankle even in Winter is just beautiful.
So over the years I have done a lot of gold-related research, accumulated a lot of pieces, most are gold plated… and I love being able to share this with you. Here are my absolute favourite jewellery brands and designers and my pick of their pieces that would be perfect for the ultimate gold gift.
