The Style Edit: Back to Basic

‘With good basics you’ll have endless options…’

Like anything in life if you have solid foundations you’re set for success. From season to season, whether you have £20, £200 or £2000 to splurge, by already having your basics nailed you can just layer on the trend pieces or simply the pieces that you fall in love with that season, and you’re good to go. But as simple as it sounds, getting the basics right isn’t easy.

So as I attempt to nail them myself I wanted to share my shopping journey and if it can help anyone else – fabulous.

1. The T-shirt

This has been the hardest for me and I certainly haven’t quite ‘nailed’ yet. It is so dependent on your body shape, but the material, length and the neckline is key. I also love wearing mens t-shirts when i want them a bit looser and lower at the neck. My current favourites are popped below…

2. The Cashmere Sweater

The Pringle Perfect 10 collection is cashmere basic heaven. Pricey though, think £400+. Having partnered with Sophia Neophitou-Apostolou, who was stylist and editor in chief of 10 magazine, they wanted to create a capsule collection ideal to travel in. But it’s gorgeous for wearing everyday. Looks like their site is currently ‘under reconstruction’ but they have a Mount Street store and sure the site will be back up soon. For a more purse friendly option…. Uniqlo cashmere blends always come up trumps!

3. The Blue Jean

This is so subjective but for me it has to be Levis…. you just need to get out there and try on as many as you can. Time consuming but so worth it when you meet ‘the one’ as they’ll be loyal for years to come!!!

4. The Grey Marl

J.crew is amazing for basics – and my favourite grey marl sweat is in the sale right now! It can be worn dressed up with a mini, or jeans and heels. With a shirt collar poking out for a preppy feel. Or totally casual with your baggy jeans. I’ve also linked a great bargain from H&M which I love…

5. The White Shirt

It’s simple, classic and chic. A white shirt is so easy to grab when you have no time to think about an outfit. Whether it is loose or fitted just make sure you feel comfortable wearing it. Pair with blue jeans for a super-easy cool look. This Boden version is beautiful and they have 10% off today if you enter code 9J9G…

6. The Breton Top

My favourite mum-uniform! I have so many Breton tops – sweaters, t-shirts, long sleeve t-shirts. You can wear a breton styled up in the evening, tucked into a leopard mini, or loose and baggy with a leather jacket for a very French feel in the day. I still stand by my recent H&M LOGG purchases they’re amazing. But classic highstreet brands like Boden, Gant and  J.Crew also do beautiful long-lasting versions. I wrote a post in December last year if you have time to read… …click here…

Next week I’ll talk about the other ‘basics’ that are key to wardrobe staples but less basic than a t-shirt – the leather jacket, blazer, leather trousers, black hat etc… hope you come back and read!

And here are is my usual ‘basic’ style inspo…

Great basics! I’m always looking for the perfect jeans but its like searching for gold at the end of the rainbow! Can I ask what size you go for in 501’s? I’m quite short [5’2 with a 25″ waist] but find the 25″ levi’s look huge on me! Any help would be really appreciated! x

I think the best way is to just try them all on, if you can go on a week day in the morning when its less busy and the assistants have time to help it’ll be so worth it xx
